This is the story of Missy aka Licorice. I was lucky enough to find her at Friends for Life and adopted her in March 2005. Missy was almost 3 yrs. old at that time and she was my faithful, loving friend for the next 6 yrs. 7 months.
She was a lab mix with a tiny bit of Doberman (so I was told) and a lot of angel mixed in.
I think she must have been an outside dog at her first home, so it took a bit of adjustment for her to live inside. She always preferred to be outside, but would humor me and spend time with me in the house. Definitely liked my bed at night though.
Missy was never much interested in playing with toys or playing fetch, but mention going for a walk and she was always ready.
She was a opportunistic food thief so I quickly learned to be vigilant and put food out of her reach. She got a nice little tenderloin steak off the counter shortly after I adopted her. Never made that mistake again, at least not often.
As she got older, about the last 2 years, she developed skin allergies that were treated with allergy shots and special baths. Then it was found she had thyroid disease, which was well controlled with medication. What finally caused her to falter was finding out she also had Cushings disease. Missy had to take medication for that also and have blood tests every 3 months to make sure it wasn't affecting her kidneys or liver.
It was so sad to see her going down hill, especially in the last six months. At the end she stopped eating, could hardly get up and would just look at me with her sad, beautiful eyes like she was begging me to take away the pain.
On November 12, 2011 I let her go, hopefully to the Rainbow Bridge to meet up with Babe, another lab mix I had for 13 years. I think they would be good pals.
It's so hard to write this because I loved her so much and will miss my wonderful Missy girl forever.
With tears in my eyes and love for my girl,
Sue Grosse
